I love the interaction with our patients and fellow first responders. My future goal is to become a paramedic.
A native of Hawarden, IA, I have been involved in the Emergency Services profession for 35 years. I graduated from Avera McKennan School of EMS in Sioux Falls. Falling in love with Kansas City, MO following my paramedic internship program there, I began my paramedic career at Mast ambulance in Kansas City, MO in 1990 as a Field Training Officer and Field Preceptor. I worked for Mast ambulance from 1990-1995. From 1993-1994, I worked as a Paramedic Supervisor for Saline County ambulance service in Marshall, MO. In 1995 I began a job with Sioux Falls Ambulance/Rural Metro, as a Paramedic/Flight Paramedic with Avera McKennan Careflight. I was employed there from 1995-2001. I secured a position with Sioux Falls Fire Rescue from 2001 to 2020. I fulfilled the roles of Firefighter, Paramedic, and Field Apparatus Operator. I currently work as a Paramedic in Lennox, SD starting back in 2009. Today, I am a Paramedic Supervisor at MedStar ambulance, starting my employment in 2019. My career path also includes serving 21 years in the Iowa Army National Guard. I believe that people in this profession can have a greater impact on people's lives than any other profession. Having the ability to make a difference, to be challenged daily, to constantly improve my mental and clinical skills reaffirms that I made the best career choice.
Dispatch & Transit Supervisor
My name is Kathy, I have been married to my wonderful husband Dennis for 43 years. We have twin daughters, one who resides in Mesa, AZ and the other one in North Platte, NE. I have been with Med-Star Ambulance for 6 years, starting as a weekend dispatcher. After doing that job for a year I became full-time night dispatcher and then moved to the positions I now hold. Currently I am the dispatch supervisor and transit manager. I do a variety of jobs from coordinating transit and ambulance trips, overseeing the dispatchers and working closely with the hospitals, nursing homes and rehabilitation facilities to ensure we facilitate their needs. No two days are ever alike and that is what I love about my job. I work with a diverse group of people from the Management Team, to the Paramedics and Emt's, dispatchers, and transit drivers. Each employee is unique in their personality, skills and abilities. The one thing they all have in common is caring and compassion for our patients and clients and that makes them the wonderful and unique people they are.
